Welcome!

 Welcome to Literacy in Life!

Hi! I'm Brandy, a 36-year-old instructional intern at Jones Elementary School, and I have a passion for teaching young learners how to read through the science of teaching reading.

"What is literacy?" you might ask.
Well, it is an essential skill needed to read, write, and communicate through written expression. Literacy instruction begins as early as three years old when children begin exploring books by learning concepts of print. It is truly amazing how much children learn before preschool just by their exposure to literacy. There are many different parts to the puzzle when teaching a young child how to read.

At Literacy in Life, you will hear about the five essential components of reading instruction, including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

The Big Five, as they are known for, are key parts of literacy.

I hope you enjoy my blog!
